Scientific Research

Stem Cell Science and Cloning for Therapy. This subproject will examine the ethical issues associated with research into stem cells and cloning. What are the ethical issues associated with different sources of embryonic stem cells, including those derived from chimeras? Should we consider alternatives to embryonic cells? Should research into cloning for the purposes of developing medical treatments, e.g. cancer research, be permitted? How should we evaluate risk related to this research? When should clinical trials be commenced? How should probabilistic information be conveyed to participants? What, if anything, does cloning change about our understanding of the potentiality of human cells? What are the impact of this research on women? Should incentives be used in this research? How should it be commercialized/patented? What are the ethical issues associated with stem cell banking? Are there limits to life extension through use of regenerative medicine? What are the ethical issues associated with failing to do such important research?
